i think this may be related to the point of the article (and the book referenced)! where the article and book discuss (english based, US-centered) race and therefore class power dynamics in the way small talk operates, i feel its not too much of a stretch to apply the same general theory to other forms of culture clash, whether that be across languages and therefore non-usian (white, cishet, christian, middle class) standards or like neurospiceyness or even things like age, queerness, or manner of upbringing

im autistic. i don't do small talk. i understand the point of it and have several fairly good scripts for when i have my Customer Service Voice in place, but i flounder when faced with "normal conversation" to the point where i assembled notes on reasonable human conversation topics ahead of meeting my (very normal, reasonable) boyfriends family. i dont do small talk because it feels very stiff from me, and i am *very bad* at following the conventionally appropriate scripts expected from small talk (ie the "how are you?" because im autistic, in situations where i dont have to Perform Peoplehood as the other party expects, i can sit and lecture about all sorts of things basically endlessly. however, because i had an absolutely shit upbringing and a lot of very bad health issues, i tend to be very selective about personal anecdotes because i hate even the potential of being pitied. in turn, like in pocket's tags, i tend to operate under the idea that people will tell me what they are comfortable sharing, and if they dont volunteer it, its none of my business, because thats how i operate myself

this is definitely true, but there are two catches: one) it is not universally true, and two) when it is true, you still have to make space for the other party to share stuff

there are definitely people who are bothered by conversations that lack "small talk" or otherwise people asking them personal questions. this is especially true in the us i would wager, given the sheer level of cultural individualism that goes on, wherein generally folks operate under the conditions that its rude to relate to someone via sharing a same-but-different personal anecdote, but also the-general-we dont know how to have a conversation that doesnt hinge on the self. if you dont ask these people the direct personal questions they require to feel involved in conversation, those relationships will hmm, struggle (i have not figured out how to manage this tho)

conversely, for folks who are more private, those relationships can feel superficial if theres not space and care left for them to open up. my bf and my gf are both very private and dont really offer up personal information unless ur really really close. being the Science Minded and also very direct person i am, when i realized my crush on my boy, i established very explicitly that he could say no to anything i asked of him and accepted his "no"s immediately when they came up. i did this very deliberately because i am very direct and "nosey", and wanted him to be comfortable telling me to mind my business if i poked where he didnt want

and it worked. the questions i tend to ask to learn about who someone is are pretty out there compared to standard small talk, so i wager they fall under the idea of "signifying" -- things like asking the best gift theyve gotten and best theyve given tell me what they value for themselves, and how they understand and relate to the people in their lives -- but while theyre direct and quite deep, theyre pretty open ended so the person i ask can give whatever kind of answer in whatever detail they're comfy with, and i still get good return as far as understanding who they are as a person, aaaaand in at least a couple instances, that space of positive acceptance of setting boundaries combined with a clear interest in Knowing Someone has lead private people to offer up things of their lives without prompting

so, it boils down to an awareness of different communication styles across cultural lines especially, whatever those cultures' lines ARE, and a willingness to meet people in the middle to make space for them to share their life and interests in a way that is more equitable than standard small talk tends to be, with whatever sort of open ended question makes sense for your situation

i hope this feeds your curiosity and excitement for me maybe doing this idea. i’m still in planning stages and reaching out to the event coordinators about if a meetup with friends/other aros like this would be okay, and figuring out the requirements to apply for a table. it appears i just need to fill out an application Dec. 1st (or after) but I’m still just waiting to hear back. This has been living in my brain for years as the picnic concept, but im starting to think that a table may be more fun/useful.

i dont plan on partnering with aurea, other than to perhaps add it to their calendar, though i may reach out to taaap as they are located in dc and march in the parade. im not sure yet because a big part of this is just doing crafts and getting aros together, and i dont particularly know if i want a big organization like that involved, and im hesitant after knowing some of their volunteers from when i was first building this community.

there are some local aspec groups and groups at the colleges nearby, and some people ive known outside of that, who may be willing to work together as a “group” if we need to to qualify for a table. mostly for that one i care about cost. i want these crafts and merch to be free because i dont have the ability to go sell and it feels wrong, but donations to make this possible/ to donate to taaap or aurea may be accepted? but mostly im just doing this because i want to.

You raised your eyebrow suspiciously at the new notification on Snapchat from ‘Tanaka’ and after swiping it open you nearly dropped your phone. Looking back at you was Nishinoya, his head tilted and eyebrow quirked in confusion with a gari-gari kun shoved halfway down his throat. TW eating disorder (recovery related, i think its relatively trigger free but i still feel the need to warn abt the topic ig?)

Ngl im really really fucking struggling with my eating disorder, if anyone has any resources abt recovery (that r actually good n helpful n not just "talk to ur doctor :) call a helpline", cause thats pretty much all ive been able to find when i look for for tangible tips) , or even just harm reduction, pls drop recs or links if u have em.

Like just personal tips would also be good if you're either in recovery or you've previously recovered (even if you've relapsed), especially if you've recovered as an adult because i feel like so much of the advice i find is like. Aimed at teenagers or parents? And thats a very different situation, i cant do recovery the same way i did when i was a middle schooler bc both my life and the disorder itself is very different now.

i know that im going to need professional help eventually but im not capable of taking that step right now, but i still need to try to get a little better on my own in the mean time? Please dont say body neutrality tho bc trust me im aware and im already working on it, but its so much more about the behaviours themselves than it is about weight, my body image isnt the root issue and it isnt actually a problem right now.

I just want a chance to try to get better myself first, even if i fail i just. Feel like it would be good, that it would be an act of very tangible self love and that having control taken away from me might just making my need for control worse and might just trigger me to get sicker, i want to atleast get my brain back a little bit before i put myself in that situation. I dont know what to do or how to do it or how to just... Let go of things that you know are irrational, because im fully (and painfully aware) of how self destructive and dangerous it is and that this isnt normal and that it makes me miserable and that it isnt worth it, but for some reason my shit idiot goblin brain doesnt care and cant fully accept it? And im incredibly fucking frustrated with my self because of that, i have the knowledge to do better and yet i cant stop, and thats almost the worst part because i feel so fucking guilty that its literally my own damn fault that im doing badly and im fully able to just DO better, there is nothing stopping me other than myself and i hate myself for it.

prompt: shouto todoroki drabble + “we’re in public, knock it off.”

it was no question pro-heroes had an image to uphold. public appearances were everything in the age of heroes. it affected their popularity, which affected their rankings, which affected their paychecks. growing up surrounded by future heroes in ua, you understood that more than ever. your boyfriend, shouto todoroki, understood that notion as well. even so, there were moments where you felt that the eyes wouldn’t stop watching the two of you. there was always this looming pressure to maintain the expectations set by the public. shouto’s fans and admirers had constantly speculated about the two of you potentially dating, met with a collection of both love and hate for this idea of a pro-hero dating a civilian. it wasn’t uncommon, but this was the pro-hero shouto they were talking about. anyone who dated him was instantly met by the angered fan who thought he deserved better, followed by a whole entourage of death threats, passive aggressive smiles during interviews, and the whispers of false rumours against you. not only that, but shouto’s reputation would plummet once the fans knew that the most eligible bachelor was taken. these were the reasons as to why you and shouto had both agreed to not make any sort of public display of affection towards one another.

shouto respected you and your boundaries, but what he hadn’t told you was that the whole secrecy of your relationship was weighing down heavily on him. he didn’t want to keep you a secret from the world anymore. he wanted to boast about you, he wanted to speak about how happy you made him in interviews, but he couldn’t. maybe he should have told you how he felt. maybe he should have been honest sooner. but shouto was never one for many words, letting his actions show through more. he had many thoughts and doubts plaguing his psyche. maybe you two just weren’t ready for the next step yet. or maybe you were ashamed of having him be so public that your privacy simply wasn’t a privilege anymore. maybe it was him making you uncomfortable. did you even like him anymore then? these thoughts built up like water in a dam, threatening to burst if one more incessant negative thought ever got lodged in the wrong place. you should have known better than to leave him in the dark like that.

the two of you were idly standing in line at the grocery store on a sleepy afternoon, shouto’s slim fingers grazing yours lightly. you felt his presence, yet did nothing to initiate anything between you two. you didn’t know who could be watching. that made you scared. you moved your hand further from his, glancing around at your surroundings to busy yourself. though, when you felt a hand slide into yours, warmth encasing your palm, you tensed. immediately you took your hand away from his as if being burned by a scalding pot.

“we’re in public, knock it off,” you mumbled beneath your breath, acutely aware of how the cashier was eyeing the two of you. shouto’s expression was unreadable to most, but behind his eyes you could see that your actions had cut him much more deeply than you realized. his emotions showed true, and shouto expressed them in the only means he knew how to. he reached for your touch again, but you moved away. “stop,” you told him firmly, further attracting the attention from the customers behind you.

“y/n, i don’t want to keep pretending-”

“not here. there are people here, we’re outside.”

you held your hands away from his open ones, balling them into fists as the whisperings of the customers and the judging glances of the cashier overwhelmed you. “i didn’t mean to scare you,” shouto’s voice wavered nearing the end of his sentence, his tone gentle as if he were talking to a frightened animal. you shook your head. there were too many people watching the two of you. there were too many things being said behind your back. you stormed out of the store, pushing past your boyfriend. shouto stood in the middle of the line looking lost and hurt, blaming himself for your outburst for not sooner understanding how you had truly been feeling about everything. maybe your relationship had been dancing on eggshells since the very beginning. there was no one else to blame but himself.

i'm fucking OBSESSED with spartan caboose so here's some headcanons

-Caboose came from the second class of spartan-IIs and is among the tallest and strongest spartan-IIs recorded, the only other spartan taller than him is Maine -Caboose is 8'2" in armor, and 7'11" out of armor (maine is 8'3" out and 8'6" in for reference) -Even in his spartan group with his 'sisters' Caboose was considered to be the tank -Practically a mechanical genius, mostly brought on by his ability to adapt which was encouraged in his training -His rank was Chief Petty Officer (E-7) -He's very skilled in fighting like hand-to-hand combat, but doesn't like to fight hand-to-hand too often since it feels too personal to him. -The reason he was sent to Blood Gulch was due to a brain injury he received on Reach, when a brute chieftain had damaged his implants -He was unable to retire due to living in the military his entire life, but also unfit for duty, but Project Freelancer scooped him up, deeming him fit to protect the Alpha -Caboose probably resented being sent to Blood Gulch, and projected most of his frustration/anger onto Tucker -Actually a really good leader, even if he's hard to understand due to his Aphasia. and my final piece so far for @geekinthecorner‘s @batfam-big-bang fic Bats Of The West, it’s Jason Todd! ngl i think this is one of the ones i had the most fun with, and also the one i crammed the most details into that no one but me will ever know exist, but i’ll share a few of them under the cut, along with the image description. plus, a list of all of Jason’s scars in this au, and how he got them.

also, like i said, this is my final piece so far but i fully intend to come back and round out the batfam, draw all the other characters i havent had a chance to get to yet, so keep an eye out for that, and in the meantime here’s some fun facts!

alright so. first off, just some general overall thoughts on Jason and some of the details i added here.

 his gun in the first pic is super expensive and pretty, but i imagine he doesnt use is as often as some of his other ones, simply because when he’s out in The Wilderness tracking down criminals for weeks on end, it’s not really the kind of place you want to bring your prettiest, most expensive gun. when he’s on the ranch or in town tho, or really just anywhere where he doesnt anticipate needing to rough it for more than a couple days (which isnt the same as not expecting the need to get rough), he’s probably got this gun.

his gun belt and holster are a whole other story tho. he spent exactly zero dollars and zero cents on them, just assembled them from some spare leather they had lying around, which is why theyre in such Not Great condition, and also why the belt itself ended up so long. he could cut it down to a more reasonable size, but it’s not like there’s anything else he could make from those scraps anyways, so why bother.

that big gun in the second image isn’t technically his tho, it’s the Communal Ranch Rifle. mainly it’s just used to scare away coyotes (or, yknow, actually hit coyotes) but it does occasionally see real action as well, tho not often.

also. does it even need to be said? his hat.. holder... bead... thing. with the turquoise inlay. is a gift from Dick

alright and now the fun part! i go through all of jason’s scars, and how he got them. there are quite a few and a lot of them are. Sad. so be warned, and take care of yourselves! (also just for the record, i promise the fic itself isnt actually as dark as this will make it sound. basically none of this shows up in the story, i was just given free reign to design whatever i wanted, and poor jason ended up paying the price)

ok so. scars. 

first off, the claw and bit marks on his arms and shoulders are from getting attacked by some coyotes back when he was still just a kid. to quote my explanation back when i pitched this to Em, “bc as a Young Human with minimal supervision and not necessarily having someone to call him inside once it gets dark, he was unfortunately Very Delicious, if somewhat scrawny, by coyote standards”

next up: a bullet scar on his abdomen, on his lower left side (our right), from some kind of shootout with a criminal. this one is middling-recent; after bruce adopted him, but before the joker thing. i dont really have anything concrete for that one but it was a through and through, and somehow, miraculously, missed hitting any bones, and any organs. just missed his lower rib by like. an inch. that one messed bruce up more than jason, honestly. if anything, he was just surprised it took him that long to get shot, with the life he's had

the ones on his cheek and on his chin were just Regular Childhood Shenanigans scars, no real story.

the one through his mouth is from his time with the joker though. there's also the J brand on his right bicep, also from the joker.

also joker related, hes got a lot of scars on his hands, especially his knuckles and fingertips, from trying to fight his way out of his captivity, and scratching his fingers raw trying to pry open the door to his cell/untie the rough rope he way tied with/whatever the specific situation was. also some minor rope burn scars on his wrists from the same deal.

also some blade scars across his palms from trying to stop/block knives. definitely with the joker, but probably at some point in his youth as well

a few faint lines across his neck from being a temporary hostage a few time while helping Bruce on cases when he was younger, but none of them ever went deep or caused any serious damage

oh and also, whip scars on his back from his time with the joker, which arent too prominent, and mostly cant be seen from the front, except for a couple of spots where they crest over his shoulders and the very tail ends of them can be seen, but they’re there 

and also some kind of straight scar on his left forearm, which was a carry-over from my usual Jason design, that i like but dont really have a story for, so that one’s purely aesthetic, lol

and that’s it! i think? that’s all my notes on that? either way this post is getting Way Too Long, and i still gotta do the image descriptions, so i’m calling it there.

in the second image, he is facing slightly to the side, with a long shotgun propped over his shoulder with one hand and an unimpressed expression on his face as he looks somewhere to the right of the viewer. he is shirtless, and his torso is muscled, stocky, and as sunburned and freckled as the rest of him. his cowboy hat is hanging off his neck again behind him, once more held in place by the braided red cord and round wood-and-turquoise bead. he is wearing tan, high-waisted pants tucked into his cowboy boots, which are the same as in the first image but now fully visible, with red pulls at the top. the pants are attached to red suspenders, though they are not on his shoulders and hang down around him instead. his gunbelt is once more around his hips, but the holster is obscured behind him, and isn't visible. the hand not holding the shotgun is down loosely at his side, and has a red and white bandana wrapped around the wrist. aight under the cut is my notes i took, I wrote down all of sugimuras lines in the game Sans the shadow sugimura as that was a cognition of okumuras and added commentary about how i take them. so. here. under the cut. if you dont know what these events are then sorry man. its in order, the first meething with him, the confidant where u meet him, and then in that one cutscene where every1 thinks akira is dead.

(ah this line. exactly what made me think that perhaps sugimura is not as evil as he seems. theres someone behind him pulling the strings. he doesnt say he will fix it, no, its his father. hes just a playing peice in his fathers plan, not unlike haru.)

That reminds me, did Takakura-san tell you about the wedding hall? He got us the Phoenix wing at the Wilton. He made a provisional reservation for ten days this coming spring. After all, The sooner the better. We'll have to look into our guests' schedules as well. There'll be over three hundred of them, you know.
